Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Create a natural ear shape and size to achieve a well-balanced and proportional face.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ

Ear protrusion is commonly due to a congenital deformity that causes affected ears to stick out too far from the head and appear enlarged, misshapen, disproportional, or asymmetric, on one or both sides. To address these concerns, Dr. Saba Ghorab offers correct ear surgery, or otoplasty, to create a more natural ear shape and size that is well-balanced and proportional to the face.

Otoplasty is a type of cosmetic ear surgery that improves the shape, size, and position of the ear. This procedure is commonly performed for pinning of prominent or protruding ears as well as to correct ear deformities caused by other birth defects, trauma, or medical conditions. Otoplasty is undertaken once the ears have reached their full size, around age 5 to 6, through adulthood.

At Saba Plastic Surgery, Dr. Ghorab is knowledgeable and experienced with tailoring corrective ear surgery to individual anatomy, development, and aesthetic desires.

What Can Otoplasty Help With?

You could be a candidate for ear surgery if you experience:

      • Protruding ears occurring on one or both sides (prominauris)
      • Overly large ears (macrotia)
      • Ear deformity caused by other birth defects, trauma, or medical conditions
      • Adult dissatisfaction with previous ear surgery

Healthy children are good candidates for ear surgery if they are:

      • At least 5 to 6 years old to allow time for the ear to finish growing
      • Cooperative and follow instructions well
      • Able to express their feelings and do not voice objections about surgery

What is Prominent Ear?

Prominent ear, or prominauris, is a congenital ear deformity caused by abnormal development of the ear cartilage. This commonly affects both ears but to varying degrees.

Prominent ear deformity is present at birth and becomes more pronounced with ear growth over time.

The ears typically stick out too far from the head and may appear enlarged, misshapen, disproportional, or asymmetric, on one or both sides.

Psycho-Social Effects of Prominent Ears

Though a cosmetic defect with no functional issues, prominent ear deformity can have a tremendous, negative psychological impact over time. Having overly protruding, misshapen ears that appear different is often a source of bullying or taunting for affected children.

It is worthwhile for parents to consider corrective ear pinning surgery for their children at a younger age or when they are at least 5 to 6 years old.

Research studies have shown that correcting even minor ear defects can significantly improve self-esteem, socialization, and school performance in young children.
